Audacity of Tanish: A theme for WordPress
August 4th, 2009 by ravi

Ahren Code’s Audacity of Tanish is a WordPress Theme with a dark motif and some slick (IMHO!) jQuery action for post display and collapsing, etc. Click on the links to the left to download the theme (you can also install it from the WordPress site), view screenshots and a grainy video, or post feature or bugfix requests.

Features

  • Darker colours with bright text
  • JavaScript effects for showing hiding posts, post info and links, etc
  • Bottom bars: sidebars at the bottom (up to three)
  • Configurable background tile and image
  • Option to show Blog Authors in bottom bar
  • Author Gravatar in post
  • Comments block show/hide
  • … and a lot more

Please click on the Screenshots link above to get a preview of the theme.

License

This theme is released under the latest version of the GPL (currently v3), whichever that may be at the time of your use. For the GPL, see: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html.You are free to use this theme for any purpose you choose, in a manner that conforms to the GPL. I would like you to leave the attribution at the bottom of the theme, but you are not required to do so.

Installation

Visit the WordPress site for detailed and authoritative instructions on installing themes. For the impatient: it is usually as simple as extracting the archive and copying the directory (“tanish”) into your WordPress installation directory under wp-contents/themes.

Notes

Versions of this theme lower than 1.0 (e.g: 0.9) are, as the number indicates, alpha releases. They have not been fully tested on all browsers (in particular IE7 and Chrome). Please be aware of this if you should choose to use this theme. I would love to hear from you if you find issues, so that I can fix them ASAP.

If you like this theme, or especially if you decide to use it, send me email or post a link to this site, leave a comment here, or some such, so I know it was useful! And if you really, really like it, how about rating it at WordPress.org?

Hello, i downloaded this theme as an blogger theme from another site, i don’t know if you created it for blogger also… but, if you did, i need some support.. there is a big problem of displaying page elements in the edit layout options… the gadgets don’t show up so that they can be reordered or edited…

      Denis,

this theme is intended for WordPress. I have no idea, in fact, how
Blogger themes are structured. Can you point me to the site from which
you downloaded the Blogger version of the theme?

        Hi ravi,

Your Tanish theme is really cool. But because I use blogger blogs primarily for personal use, I was really happy when I saw this theme converted to blogger platform. Here is where I got the theme: http://wpbloggerthemes.blogspot.com/2009/08/audacity-of-tanish.html. I think Dennis got his theme from here too.

You might want to add for your next release a navigation bar after the header so that it will be user-friendly for all site visitors… just a suggestion :)

          October 21st, 2009 at 2:19 pm

Shiroi, Thank you for the comment and the pointer to the Blogger theme converter. It seems to do a decent job of it!

I am not sure what you mean by a navigation bar. Can you explain? Thank you.

If you’re still looking for adding page elements, check out this site: http://bloggersentral.blogspot.com/2009/07/creating-navigation-tab-in-blogger.html. It discusses how to add an element to put a head navi bar on blogger blogs but the works is the same when you add gadgets for any “locked” elements.

    Problem.

    Installed using WordPress 2.8.4.

When I click on Appearance and click on Tanish Options, this come up.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: scandir() in /home/content/g/l/e/glenn1barker/html/wp-content/themes/tanish/functions.php on line 214

    Any ideas?

    I think this is line 214 from the functions.php file: if( $options[$fldname] == $image )

    $checked = “checked”;

    Thanks,

    Glenn

      Glenn,

my guess is that you are running on a system that uses PHP4, and the
function mentioned below (scandir()) is available only in PHP5. Are
you capable of checking and letting me know? If so, I can give you
custom changes that will work for you.

  • Glenn writes:
    October 7th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

Yes, you are correct. I have it running on a php4x system. Please let me know what changes are needed.

    Thank you,
    Glenn

            Glenn

Glenn, would you mind if you give you the latest version of the theme (to be released in week or so) rather than the older version that’s on the WordPress theme site and which you are using? It’s easier for me to make the change in the current code than to go back and fork the old code.

            • ravi writes:
              January 4th, 2010 at 5:25 pm

Glenn, please let me know if a newer version of the theme is fine with you.

Hey Ravi! Is the bottom area the only space to put ad banners on this theme?

    • ravi writes:
      July 19th, 2010 at 12:28 pm

Hello Rob, since there are no “sidebar”s in the theme (widgets appear at the bottom, in three columns), I guess the answer is yes. Of course if you are a WP code ninja, you can hack in the ad banners anywhere you wish. And if you have such an idea in mind, I will be glad to help you out with answers to any questions you have.

I have been trying to upgrade one of my blogs to WordPress 3.0 on my test server, theme is Audacity-of-tanish. Most everything worked except for the Tanish Options: I get “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”
How do I get those back?

    • ravi writes:
      July 19th, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Hello JeannieU, others have reported this problem as well. I am investigating it and hope to have a fix tonight.

      • JeannieU writes:
        July 19th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Meanwhile I have been using the “Kickradio bypass” (spacing the page name in the browser) to get around the problem. WP 3.0 may require you to be more UNIX with your naming conventions now …

Jeannie, see above for a temporary fix. Fixed version of the theme coming up soon.

    Hello Ravi,
I was a bit too impatient and went produktion with the bypass. I’m tickled pink, how nicely my wishes came true with your design on top of the WP engine. I tuned your color design down somewhat, though, because my art is somewhat on the flamboyant side on it’s own. But it was actually your color design that attracted me to your tanish-theme in the first place. Well, now I’ll wait more patiently for your update…

    • ravi writes:
      August 31st, 2010 at 5:27 pm

Jeannie, thank you for all the kind words and your patience. Apologies for my lack of update on the theme. The latest WordPress natively supports background image configuration, so I am working on getting all that stuff out of my theme and letting my users set it using WordPress. I hope to have a new version of the theme out shortly.

Hi, I just started using another of your wonderful themes today.

I felt one important part missing on the theme – Search. If I try to put it on the bottom (side)bar, it doesn’t show up properly. Any hacks for this?

And sorry, I tried finding if this was already resolved on your tenderapp, but didn’t bother to post there.

    • ravi writes:
      March 14th, 2011 at 12:10 pm

Hmm, I had coded it such that if you add a Search widget, it would not be collapsed… let me check my code. Another option is for you to style it that way using custom.css. If you want to go that route let me know and I can work with you.

      • Kartik Singhal writes:
        March 14th, 2011 at 12:25 pm

Yeah it’s not collapsing, but also not fitting into its specified area too.

Sure, it would be great to work with you. I was wondering if that search box could be put outside of the sidebar to make it easily visible and distinct.
